rP23888: Disable Persian Hall & Ishtar gate as buildable structures.
Summary

This patch makes the Persian Hall and Ishtar Gate unbuildable.

0 A.D.'s interpretation of the Kardakes is rather problematic; see this forum thread.

Only after his defeat by Alexander the Great at the Battle of the Issus (333 BC), Darius III sent for a new army. At the Battle of Gaugamela (331 BC), which marked the end of the Achaemenid Empire, about 15 Indian elephants (Arrian Anabasis 3.8.6) participated. This is the one and only known case for the Persian use of war elephants. Apparently they're a novelty. War elephants are not mentioned by Herodotus (covering history up to c. 480 BC), nor by Xenophon (describing the situation c. 400 BC).

The hall actor itself is loosely based on the Gate of All Nations in Persepolis. However, 0 A.D.'s version has entrances only on two sides; the most important one, one the south, facing Darius's Apadana, is missing.

The famous Ishtar Gate of Babylon is Neo-Babylonian, i.e. predating the Achaemenids. Allowing pers to build it is anachronistic, akin to ptol building the Great Pyramid at Giza, or brit building Stonehenge.

Taking everything into account, it's probably best to disable these historically inaccurate assets for now.

I agree for the most part. I've always hated the "Persian Hall" as a buildable structure.

As far as war elephants go for the Persians, perhaps keep them and give them a low training limit of 5.

if it is historically inaccurate, then I think I must agree.
Are kardakes inaccurate too, or can they be moved to another building? In fact hoplites are "useless" (immortals is the same), but javelins would be interesting to keep.

Are kardakes inaccurate too,

Yes, they are, that's actually what triggered this patch, see forum discussion (link in summary).

Fine for me, will commit tomorrow.

I'm taking @borg-'s word that this doesn't unbalance the Persians.

There seems to be a valid argument for giving Persians "mercenary" elephants. They were used at the Battle of Gaugamela, (alongside Chariots which we reintroduced ;) ). Further, the Aechemenid empire, following Darius 1's conquests, did have access to India and its elephants.

I think we should perhaps reintroduce them, possibly in a mercenary camp of sorts. Likewise, giving access to hellenised hoplites might be interesting.

That being said, Persia already has a ridiculously large roster :p .

That being said, I agree with the arguments made above, so this will be for later.

This tooltip is meaningful (see line 49) and should have been kept (cf. rome_arch.xml).
There might be more mistakes in other recent commits, so I'll include restoring this line in a future fix oversights patch.

Ah, thanks. I think your original diff removed the tooltip, and even though it changes I just removed it.

Welp'

Yes, the old superfluous tooltip was replaced only a few days ago by D2892/rP23865.
