Currently espionage is rather expensive (500 metal for 15 s) and not very useful. This patch doubles the duration (from 15 s to 30 s) and makes all Support units bribable (instead of only Traders and Merchant Ships). This won't distort the current balance, but does make this mechanic more interesting.

Ideas that go further:

  • Sharply reduce the cost (e,g. 200 metal).
  • Greatly increase the duration (to at least 60 s).
  • Make all units bribable (except animals, catafalques, and heroes).

Why would anyone want to do this? I wouldn't want to spend resources just to see that the enemy has a soldier fighting my army. Just like I wouldn't want to spend resources to see that my enemy has women farming by their CC because I already assume this.

Real-time knowledge is better than old knowledge? Plus you see everything that unit sees, including the movements of nearby enemy units, not just what that unit is doing.

My point is that this would be a major nerf to the tech. In most games, you would have like a 20% chance of seeing that the enemy is farming around their CC, which everyone already assumes to be true. Or like a 50% chance that your enemy is fighting your army that you are already engaging, which you will obviously already know.

I already never use this tech because I don't find it very helpful.

For the record, soldiers are not affected by this patch.

I've personally only ever used this tech to try and find the last few units of the AI. I think the change makes sense.

I'd partly side with @chrstgtr here, support is women -- who are mostly farming -- or healer -- probably close to you border (and fishing ship, which could be interesting). However, seeing the advancing of a previously unknown army may be more informative than the fact that a trader is walking in the hinterlands of a base.
Anyway, I've never really used this, and probably won't after this patch. So I've no opinion ;P
