Note: The changes made here should also be applied to the art source repository, a task not done yet.
Simple corrections:
- 'Uerkingetorix' -> 'Vercingetorix', as Caesar wrote it. The Gaulish name 'Ver-rix Cingetos' appears to be correct.
- 'Uae Uictos' -> 'Vae Victis', also improved description of the feature
- 'celt' -> 'Celtic'
- 'smallish' -> 'small'
Some spellings come from a German book that labels them as Greek, e.g. 'Uerkingetorix' is found here: https://books.google.de/books?id=C8PzilIl9y0C&pg=PA990&lpg=PA990&dq=Uerkingetorix&source=bl&ots=ih3Fim12cY&sig=UxSI8gEJijn9HUfBXbxC9ITKEQA&hl=de&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwi39Oa77-3TAhUMJ8AKHZKPAoYQ6AEIMDAA#v=onepage&q=Uerkingetorix&f=false
This book uses an obscure German ruleset that transcribes Greek to Latin characters to make them searchable in libraries: https://books.google.de/books?id=C8PzilIl9y0C&pg=RA2-PR8&dq=Die+Umschrift+griechischer+Buchstaben+erfolgte+nach+den+Regeln&hl=de&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjT0p-FvO_TAhUF5xoKHXzICUcQ6AEIJjAA#v=onepage&q=Die%20Umschrift%20griechischer%20Buchstaben%20erfolgte%20nach%20den%20Regeln&f=false
You can read those rules here if you like them, but I don't see why the hell 0.A.D. should follow them: http://d-nb.info/986402338/34
Latinisations:
Our knowledge of Gaulish names has been preserved almost exclusively by Roman authors, though some texts were also written in Greek.
Ancient authors spelled foreign names as best they could from hearing them (note that Gauls were mostly illiterate).
Some examples of different spellings for the same person:
- Indibilis (Livy), Andobales (Polybius)
- Britomartus (Plutarch), Viridomarus (Florus), Vertomarus (Livy)
Ancient Greeks typically used the suffix '-os' where Romans would use '-us'. The Roman forms are usually the ones Gauls are known by, as in the case of Brennus, and I suggest we stick to them, unless we know better. Thus:
- 'Brennos' -> 'Brennus'
- 'Britomartos' -> 'Britomartus' -> Viridomarus (more common, and couldn't be associated with Britons)
- 'Valetiacos' -> 'Valetiacus'
Other spellings:
Epos is correct Gaulish, Lembus is Latin for a type of ship found across many cultures. I'm also fine with Gaisaredos, Solduros and Cavalidos. They don't need to change.
Besides:
At least some information on the Gauls appears to be copy-pasted from the internet. Ideally it will be improved by someone with the necessary knowledge (not me).
