Summary

That unit was a bit controversial in the 'multiplayer lobby'.
I followed some passionated debates about that and played a lot of test games (team games or 1v1).
Here is a proposal about a slight nerf:

  • making a more consistent run speed (so we are just below a cavalry unit)
  • reducing the armor a bit (the current -3 is just removing the spearmen armor bonus, so -4 would be good for that naked unit).

Some brief words on the reasoning of the armor removal?
From the gameplay pov, is the armor change the key to fixing the balancing?
The unit is very expensive and usually only 4 can do a really good rush in the first 15 minutes (as it should).
Is it too easy / effective / efficient?
If so, is it really the fact that the unit is too well armored, or is it because it's so fast that it can never be hit?
The fanatic has 16 walk speed, cavalry 17.5 walk speed, so maybe it's more needed to further reduce the walk speed.
But since I didn't really follow these a21 flavored rushes in the last months nor going to test this sufficiently, I can't really tell.
Agree that being naked isn't a pro for armor.

Indeed 34 run speed was a bit ridiculous compared to cavalry that has a about half of that.

I just thought the opposite of it, drecrease your mov speed that is exaggerated, and increasing your hp or armor, so it can also be used for late games with some efficiency.
If it slows down, it becomes more vulnerable, so despite the increase of hp or armor, and also makes it stronger for other functions, not just rush

Indeed the speed is the more annoying (that's obviously the thing I would frist nerf). Despite that, it makes more sense to keep that specificity for the 'fanatic feeling' and for not making it redundant with their swordman champ.
So something like:

  • keeping design (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaesatae for example, I am also lazy to search but I read old logs and forum).
  • keeping different use for different units,
  • and nerfing that a bit (in that sense 'The appearance of these well-built naked warriors, and the noise of their trumpets and war-cries, intimidated the Romans, but their small shields offered little protection against Roman javelins, and the Gaesatae were driven back and their allies slaughtered.' few fanatics can be handled with soldiers. the main issue in my opinion is that they easy bait soldiers and go for women. While towers doesn't deal enough damage, on the other hand palizades and a bunch of woodcutter soldiers may be a valid defense, but it requires time and probably increasing fanatics training time by 5 sec and keep the current armor would do the job.
