Use the selectionChanged method as suggested. It does the same thing, additionally sets validGame / invalidGame status.

I don't think, that we need to reset the selection, it looks not obvious for players. I suggest to compare names.
I don't want to lost selection just on a description entering. Because a selection may be a prefix/source of the new description.

Another possibility would be to transform the save dialog to a three way choice (cancelling, overwriting, saving new), would that be better?

starting these functions with on makes it a bit easier to recall that it's event-driven.
