Summary

As I stated in other places, I'm not the biggest fan of acceleration, so I thought I give it a try and tweak the values until I like it.
Read the discussion on this patch.

there is no deeper meaning of 35-> that's just a value, where human units feel a little bit less "inert", while still slowing down siege & ships enough to be noticeable and give their movement more realism.

Another way is to reduce the walk and run speeds across the board. Probably has the same visual effect, just slows the game down overall.

But wouldn't that need art changes, so that the animations aren't going out of sync?

Nope! The animations slow or speed up dynamically. :)

Ah ok, guess I misunderstood the ticket #5680
In that case: sure that would also be a possibility, but arguably a bigger change than just increasing the acceleration?

Yes, it would be a very big change. I'm on the record as being against turn rates/acceleration, but even apart from that slowing down unit speed will cause units to be less able to retreat, which was one of the biggest problems with turn rates in a24. Something like a 20% decrease in speed will result in 20% more losses during retreats. That just discourages micro and strategic play.

I also think the a24 experience has shown that the player base does not like the slow gameplay style.

Depends whom you ask. ^^'

I'm also not a fan of slowing down movement. I want units to feel responsive. This is definitely a step in the right direction. I personally prefer a value of 30, 35. With these values, it would still be possible to dodge shots at further distances, with the 35 acceleration value it requires very good timing to dodge a shot at a 30m distance with cavalry. Don't know how achievable it would be in multiplayer, but I suppose it does still go against the base idea of such being impossible.

Would also be ok with me, but I think less with the people who prefer slower movement :p

If movement is slowed again you can be sure 0 A.D. will die again. Almost no one wants slow movement like in a24, at least top players, who are those who really know about this game. Slow movement will destroy this game again.

up to 35 as per @ValihrAnt 's suggestion and as no one seems to disagree.

keep ships, eles and siege slightly lower.

I am not really happy with the acceleration value of 18 which feels unpleasant.

To prevent negative response comparable to the response on turn rates in A24, I think it is good to go for the safe bet and to increase acceleration to 35. Also if the value of 35 would be to high, we could adapt that in further alphas without risking to turn A26 into a bad alpha.

I have to agree. 18 really does feel very unpleasant. I would be prepared for some very disgruntled players if the value remains at 18.

As for 35. It's snappy enough without being over the top. No risk of the value being too high at 35 imho.

I like this patch version because the units feel more responsive. The speed of 18 feels slow and made me feel impatient.
